Portugal’s first regenerative seaweed farm in Nazaré
Nazaré Nazaré Nazaré
After three years of collaboration, we’re ready.
The Nazaré Regenerative Seaweed Farm goes in the water this November 2025. This is what’s possible when surfers, scientists, and fishermen choose to heal the ocean together.
Be there when it happens, everyone is invited!
More details coming soon.
On the 16th of November 2025,
Today, in Nazaré, a coastal fishing village in Portugal’s Oeste region and home to the world’s biggest waves, @hope_zones_foundation launches Portugal’s first regenerative seaweed farm – a historic step for ocean restoration and sustainable marine innovation
The Nazaré Regenerative Seaweed Farm restores kelp forests on artificial reefs, enhances marine biodiversity, improves water quality, and captures carbon from the atmosphere. Anchored in one of the world’s most challenging ocean environments, it serves as a living laboratory for nature-based climate solutions that can be replicated across other coasts.
João de Macedo, @wsl big-wave surfer and conservation pioneer, says: "The ocean has given me a lifetime of lessons, joy, and challenges. Through this seaweed farm, we can give back – restoring the coast, supporting our community, and protecting our oceans for future generations."
This groundbreaking project brings together surfers, scientists, and local fishers, showing how community-driven action can rebuild coastal ecosystems while supporting sustainable livelihoods.
