What to expect by visiting Tapada de Mafra?
Imagine a place where you feel ancient trees, walking on a path full of plants, flowers by the river, admiring nature, its calmness, wilderness, and peace.
This place was created in 1744, when the King ordered the creation of a land designed for the Royal Hunting Grounds. Since that time, we can admire the incredible land of forests, hikes, animals, plants, and trees. This place is located on 1201 hectares surrounded by a 21 km stone wall.
You will find here an example of indigenous biodiversity with various native species of Portugal and different ecosystems.
It’s very common to see traces of boars, deers, or foxes. You can feel the pure nature in a wild environment.
This place is full of species of mammals - almost 30, but also 70 species of birds, more than 20 species of amphibians, reptiles, and macrofungi have been identified here. Furthermore, around 100 species of plants are here waiting for you to discover.
From 2019, Hunting Grounds was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage together with the Royal Building of Mafra, including the Palace, Basílica, Convent, and Cerco Garden.

It’s a great place to have a picnic in nature or hike all day. Besides hiking on one of the 4 routes located here, you can find a description of animals and plants occurring in this area.
One of these information boards says that many ages ago this area was full of volcanoes, and you may even find some remains of volcanic activities.
The old volcanic channels, approximately 72 million years old, are part of the Lisbon Volcanic Complex. They influence the current terrain of this region.

This place offers 4 hiking routes; probably you will not walk them all in one day.
Be aware that some of them are quite difficult, so take the path that you think is adequate for you on that day, but not too harsh, to enjoy this beautiful area without any difficulties. We recommend taking water with you, comfortable shoes, and some snacks. On a sunny day, is good to have a hat. Tapada de Mafra has a very different climate from the one next to the ocean shore - it’;s more hot and the air is drier.

There are many trips that you can discover on a SUP board, it’s very easy and brings a lot of fun! This school offers many adventurous trips, including the Ocean Experience and the World Surfing Reserve Tour, which is a journey through the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve beaches.
Through Yoga training that is for everyone who appreciates the sound of the waves while relaxing with their favourite asanas, in parallel with floating on the water.

The first thing - we advise taking a hat. Yes, this simple tip will help you to avoid a sun hangover…Before a trip, do some warm-up to prepare your body to move! We are suggesting taking a sun protection cream at least 30. The sun is truly strong on the water!
Bring a swimsuit to be free to swim before or after the trip, or a surf swimming suit, depending on the weather.
If you really need to take your phone, just take it in a waterproof neck case…but maybe you don’t need it and you can enjoy your logout…just try it!

3. Magical Waterfall Cascata de Anços (Cascata de Mourão) - to feel like in The Lord of the Rings movie.
What to expect by visiting Cascata de Anços/ (Cascata de Mourão)?
This place is located 20 minutes' driving from Ericeira center. You will find here stunning views like those from the Lord of the Rings book and movie! This area is connected to local stories and legends.
The history of this waterfall from the fairy tale is long, back centuries, when this place was used as a power mill. The majestic waterfall is over 30 metres high.
You will find here several plant species that are rare and only grow in this region, as well as many birds and mammals.
The name “Mourão” comes from the word “Mora” – this valley was once inhabited by the Moors.
The water originates from the Rio Mourão, a tributary of the Lizandro River.
What amazing things can you experience at Cascata de Anços/ (Cascata de Mourão)?
The hike to the waterfall is not difficult, takes around 25 minutes. The waterfall is the most spectacular after heavy rain. You can easily observe many birds here and admire the calming sound of the water in the surroundings of the wild nature and silence.

There is no official parking at Anços town, but you may find a few places to park nearby.

It’s worth adding that this place is not only a tourist attraction - you may feel a higher energy that comes from all the history of this place. That’s why it’s one of the best places for deep contemplation in the wild nature, surrounded by the magnificence of the wilderness and serenity.

Drive there with GPS to Cascata de Anços, to Anços town- the waterfall is located 25 minutes by car from Ericeira - you may park near Rua da Laranjeira. It’s just around 25 minutes of an easy hike from there.

Have a good sleep before your surfing lesson, and better eat a light breakfast like porridge with a banana so you don't feel heavy. Drink a lot of water - the ocean with the sun will dehydrate you.
Take a suncream with at least SPF 50 - the sun has a higher impact on the water! There are also sunblocks, SPF 100. You can have a swimsuit under the surfing wetsuit.
Before a surf lesson, you need to warm up your body, but your surf instructor will guide your training.
Tiago Pires Surf School offers more than just surf lessons.

RODA E-Bike is a company established by a Peruvian-German couple - they launched an eBike business to offer adventure and sustainability.
There are many marvelous roads that you can ride a bike on in Ericeira and its surroundings, but many hills are quite challenging for a standard bike. That’s why an electric bike can be an excellent option to go for a ride on a bike trip here!

RODA E-Bike offers bikes in a few places. Ericeira Center and Ribamar, Lisboa, Cascais, and Peniche. There is also an option of a Scooter rental.
