Art, history, cultural dialogue, and the living traditions of Asia | Art, history, cultural dialogue, and the living traditions of Asia
The collection that forms the basis of the permanent exhibitions of Museu do Oriente is divided into two large collections.
The first, allusive to the Portuguese presence in Asia, consists of more than two thousand artistic and documentary objects, the result of an acquisitions policy, carried out by Fundação Oriente since its establishment, from the national and international art markets.
⛩️ It includes several exceptional pieces, namely the seventeenth and eighteenth-century Chinese and Japanese folding screens, Namban art pieces of great rarity, emblazoned porcelains from Companhia das Índias for the Portuguese market and porcelains decorated with Western export themes intended for the European market, and a significant set of pieces related to the cultures of Timorese peoples.
The second major collection is assembled under the name of Kwok On Collection.
⛩️ As a result of the donation of the Musée Kwok On in Paris, it is made up of more than 15,000 testimonies of the performative arts of the Asian continent and of the narrative, religious and ritual heritage of which these arts are an expression.
⛩️ It documents the main Asian religions, their ritual manifestations, their variants, and pantheons, from India to Japan, from Vietnam to China, from Indonesia to Thailand, through Chinese popular religion, Hinduism, Shinto, Buddhism and Islam.
⛩️ An authentic kaleidoscope of legends, stories and myths, values and beliefs that define and convey Asian identities.
⛩️ The collection includes sets of costumes, puppets, masks, games, musical instruments, prints and paintings, posters, statuettes, and countless ritual objects.
