Museu do Fado - Fado Museum

1 Largo do Chafariz de Dentro

MAP

The Fado Museum permanent exhibit is a tribute to Fado and its promoters, promoting its history since nineteenth century Lisbon.

🪕 The museological circuit was drawn around the need to incorporate renewed thematic contents, from the recently incorporated museological spoil to the theoretical constructions about fado brought to light by research projects under the museum’s tutelage, or even the information included in the institution’s archive, which still has not been concluded to this date due to space contingencies and the recent evolution of Lisbon’s urban song, and the subsequent studies on it.

Mission
Entirely devoted to Lisbon's urban song universe, Museu do Fado opened its doors to the public on the 25 September 1998, celebrating Fado’s exceptional value as an identifying symbol of the City of Lisbon, its deep roots in the tradition and cultural history of the country, its role in the cultural identity statement and its importance as an inspiration source and intercultural trade between people and communities.

History
Since opening to the public in 1998, the Museum has incorporated items belonging to hundreds of interpreters, authors, composers, musicians, instrument manufacturers, scholars and researchers, professional and amateur artists: hundreds of personalities that witnessed and wrote the history of Fado, and that did not hesitate to cede the testimonial of their affective and memorial patrimony to us, for the construction of a collective project.
