SHODŌ - SHO

Considered one of Japan’s most traditional arts, calligraphy [Shodō] is also one of the oldest.

The writing of ideograms was introduced to Japan from China in the 5th century, and from the very beginning, an appreciation and admiration for this refined form of writing as an art form were cultivated, following the Chinese influence.

👘 Even today, it is part of the curriculum taught in Japan starting in the first grade.

👘 Beginning with a 4B graphite pencil, children imitate the models of characters drawn in a balanced and harmonious manner on a sheet of paper.
👘  Years later, they begin practicing Shodō with a brush and ink on rice paper.
👘 The first steps in learning always consist of imitating or copying the models of classical writings, which are of great beauty. In addition to formal instruction, a large number of students attend a master’s studio (Shodō salon) to perfect their technique.

👘 The two words referring to Japanese calligraphy are sho and shodō.

It is a living art despite being traditional.
