2. Pastel de nata, croissant, and coffee at O Pãozinho das Marias

Why it’s worth eating pastel de nata, croissants, and coffee at Marias
You may ask yourself, Why are we recommending something so obvious like pastel de nata and coffee?
Let’s start from the beginning…

Pastéis de nata - it’s a crunchy, melting little tart with egg pudding, absolutely even more delicious when warm. You will get them in every bakery or shop in Portugal.

So what is the story of this little desert that has changed our mood for the better for centuries?
The recipe of pastel de nata, originally called Pastéis de Belém, was created before the 18th century by Catholic monks in Lisbon. At the time, monasteries used egg white for starching clothes, like religious habits.

Then they used the leftover egg yolks for cakes and pastries. The recipe for pastel de nata became so famous that you can still find this delicacy in all of Portugal, still in Belem, which is not a monastery nowadays, and even all over the world (information about the delicious cake has not escaped other foodies).

Beyond any doubt, one of the best pastel de nata in Ericeira you will eat in O Pãozinho das Marias. This melting warm cookie will appear in your dreams, and you will come back here to make your day brighter and brighter…and brighter again.

7. Os Farturas De Mafra, Ericeira, Largo de S. Sebastião

Why is it worth visiting Os Farturas De Mafra?
This food track serves delicious churros & farturas, warm, with amazing chocolate or caramel. OK, but what are churros & farturas?

One theory suggests that Portuguese traders, during their journeys to the Far East, came across new culinary techniques—particularly in southern China. There, they encountered a fried dough snack called Youtiao (also known as Youzagwei).
Inspired by it, the Portuguese tried to recreate their version back home. However, since the Chinese method of "pulling" the dough into long strips was kept secret—so secret that sharing it with foreigners was punishable by death—they had to improvise. Instead of pulling, they shaped the dough using a star-shaped mold, giving birth to what we now know as farturas.

Another popular theory traces the origins of farturas to neighboring Spain. Spanish shepherds, often isolated in the mountains without access to fresh ingredients, created a simple dough they could easily fry over an open fire. These rustic treats evolved into churros, and it’s possible that farturas were the Portuguese adaptation of this humble mountain snack.
